New Tang Dynasty Television - NTD.

A Google team arrived on August 10th to Peru, from the United States, to reward the Peruvian lawyer, Jorge De Albertis, winner of the international "Model your Town Competition" 2010, who used SketchUp as a tool to model the District of Barranco in 3D.
According to the contest, the winner must choose a school to which Google would donate $ 10,000. The prize was awarded to "Reino de España" public school in Barranco, who received the representatives of Google and De Albertis with a warm celebration.

The Montero Bernales house was built and designed by architect Ricardo J. Malachowski in 1924, being its first owner Mr. Guillermo Billinghurst, Mayor of Lima and President of Peru. In 1936 it was acquired by Mr. Manuel Montero Bernales, Mayor of Barranco. In 1979 was acquired by the Bachmann spouses and in 1987 it was declared a historic monument. In 2010 it was restored to to host the architecture design & decoration exhibition "Casacor Peru 2010".

The Osma house was built between 1900 and 1906 by architect Santiago Basurco for Pedro de Osma y Pardo. This house has 2 buildings with art nouveau stained glass, metal roofs, plaster carvings, and crystal chandeliers. In 1980, this house was converted into a museum that exhibits private collection of colonial art of the Cuzco, Ayacucho and Arequipa schools.

Google praises increase of 3D modeling programs in Peru

Lima, Aug. 13 (ANDINA). Peru has been registering an important increase in the use of 3D modeling programs and applications to satisfy the needs of a growing market with a rising number of internet users along with the expansion of broadband connections.

Google's Education Program Manager Allyson Mc Duffie, said that number of users of 3D programs in Latin America is rising fast and becoming more popular in all stages levels, from school to universities."We have many users in Latin America, Brazil, Peru and this number is rising rapidly. This program is very popular in education from grade levels to university levels, students use it to design model of schools and houses", she said. Mc Duffie visited Lima as part of a Google delegation to launch Google Sketchup 3D modeling program in the country. She said this 3D modeling program is very easy to use and learn and it's available in all Latin America. "This is a program that any one can learn how to use, very easy to use. Originally designed for architects to make buildings, but now it's free and available for any one in the world to make models," she stated.

In May, a 3D video of the Barranco district in Lima, won the Google Model Your Town Competition, out of five finalists. The winner was Jorge De Albertis Bettocchi, a 38 year-old corporate business attorney.

He entered the competition to generate pride among his fellow citizens and have his 3D models serve as a tool for tourism, promotion, investment, and preservation of Barranco’s historic architecture.

Barranco 24. Villa Primavera.

This house, built in 1903 by the Alvarez Calderon family and declared a national monument by the National Institute of Culture, was very damaged and ready to be demolished when it is bought, rescued and rebuilt by Ms. Maria Bieberach Olle. Considering its actual conservation and historical value, is being considered to be used as a Museum, cultural centre, or boutique hotel.

Barranco 23.- El Mirador.

“El Mirador” is a viewpoint place constructed in 1988 at the edge of the cliff and at the back of the Chapel La Ermita, during the administration of Mayor Pedro Allemant. Considered one of Lima’s most romantic places, is also visited by tourists who can appreciate the Pacific Ocean and sunsets. Some nearby restaurants are the “Acantilado de Barranco”, “La Posada del Mirador”, “La Flor de la Canela”, and “El Rincón de los Suspiros”.

Barranco 22.- Saenz Peña Avenue & San Martin Obelisk.

The Saenz Peña Avenue and walkway (Barranco, Lima, Peru) was constructed in 1912 by Barranco’s major Aurelio de Souza. In its center, there’s an obelisk to Jose De San Martin previously located in Paseo Colón avenue in the center of Lima until 1921 when it was moved to this location.

Initially this model was not included as part of the Barranco 3D Project and did not participated in the Model Your Town Competition, as it is in a far side of Barranco and most of Barranco models.

Barranco 20.- Houses and a building in Domeyer and El Libertador (San Martin) streets.

"Rancho Liébana" is an old historical house in Domeyer street, built in the late XIX century by the Pierola family. Also in this model is a modern house and a building in El Libertador (San Martin) street; in Barranco, Lima, Perú.

19.- Domeyer, Cavero & Junín streets, La Tapa Restaurant, La Posada del Ángel III bar, Domeyer hostel.

In the block between El Libertador street (which converts into Pedro de Osma street), Domeyer, Junín and Cavero streets, there are some houses with more than 100 years old. There we can find the restaurant La Tapa, the bar La Posada del Angel III, Domeyer hostel, among others.

This model was very laborious because of the size of the block and because there’s a condominium in Junin street that increases the number of houses and facades, in addition to irregular and inaccurate terrain. For this model I used large number of poligons and 44 phototextures, despite which weighs just 544 kb.

I thank all those who supported this project, promoted and voted. Today it was announced that Barranco was the winner of Google "Model Your Town Competition", an award I share with all Peruvians. I also want to congratulate the other finalist modelers in Donostia-San Sebastian, West Palm Beach, Dursley and Braunschweig, all of them who deserve this prize and recognition for the excellent work done.

18.- Chabuca Granda walkway, Tio Mario & Songoro Cosongo Restaurants, Santos bar.
The Chabuca Granda walkway communicates the Municipal Park with the Bridge of the Sighs, and was named after the Peruvian composer and singer Chabuca Granda (1920 – 1983). At its sides are the Tio Mario restaurant, Santos bar and Songoro Cosongo Restaurant.

Public voting for the Google Model Your Town Competition has now closed

Today, public voting for the Google Model Your Town Competition has now closed. It has been a campaign full of spontaneity and good will, executing the ideas in the way they emerged, and I think it has been very successful indeed.

As a result, thousands of people from all over the world visited Barranco in 3D, and now know that somewhere in the southern hemisphere near the sea, there is what was once a village of fishermen that still preserves its culture, traditions and monumental architecture, and inspires artists, musicians and writers. On May 14 the winner will be announced, but the Barranco 3D project will continue to develop, because regardless of the outcome of the competition, it has generated pride in its neighbors and fellow citizens, and will serve as a tool for tourism and investment promotion, and preservation of its historic architecture.

The voting period is over, therefore I would like to comment on this model, that didn’t got in time to be included in the Model Your Town Competition.

The Enrique Coloma and Domeyer streets in Barranco, Lima- Peru, has some beautiful and well preserved old houses. In two of them operates the The Press & Society Institute (Instituto Prensa y Sociedad) and the Sabor & Tradición Restaurant.

16.- La Ermita Church & the Bridge of Sighs (Puente de los Suspiros).

The voting period is over, therefore I would like to comment on this model, that didn’t got in time to be included in the Model Your Town Competition.

The Church “La Ermita” was built in 1805 by Father Villalta, pastor of Surco in the nineteenth century in the place where a lighted cross miraculously appeared to guide the return to land of fishermen lost at sea. On January 14, 1881 was burned during the war with Chile. Rebuilt, its roof was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1974 and it’s top cross has almost fallen. Since then, the church has remained closed for almost 40 years. While its facade is in good condition, the roof needs urgent reconstruction.
The Bridge of Sighs (Puente de los Suspiros) was built in 1876 during the government of Mayor Enrique García Monterroso, and was also damaged in the war with Chile. Reconstructed, was a source of inspiration for the famous composer and singer Chabuca Granda (1920-1983), reason why there’s a monument in his honor. The bridge has 8 m. tall, 31 m. long and 3 m. wide.

This model contains a complete block of Barranco. Unfortunately only one of it's historic houses remain, built in 1918 and where you can find the “Canta Rana” restaurant. In the rest of the block we find the Barranco Police Station and some modern homes.

12.- Grau street, San Martin street, Berninzon house / Ayahuasca Bar, Checa street, Rospigliosi alleyway & old houses. The Berninzon House is located on N° 130 San Martin street, Barranco district of Lima, Peru. His architectural style is Republican, with neoclassical and eclectic influences, was built between 1875 and 1895 and is one of the oldest and representative houses of the district for which it was declared National Heritage by the National Institute of Culture. Currently the Ayahuasca Bar operates in it.

11.- Old Barranco district market.
This former Barranco District Market was designed by architect Ricardo J. Malachowski and construction performed by the engineer Luis Razzeto in 1924. It has been declared a historical monument and is a valuable example of Barranco's early twentieth century architecture, with eclectic style with elements of early Art Deco. After suffering constant deterioration suffered from the lack of maintenance, which threatened its stability, was refurbished in 2007 and in it currently runs the Metro supermarket.

10.- Grau street, Rosell Rios house, & other buildings.

The Rosell-Rios House was built between 1909 and 1912 by french architect H. Ratouin, with the support of engineers Francisco Behr and Hugo Alva, when Barranco was a popular seaside resort for the upper class. It has an area of 2.220 square meters, plus a basement of 1,180 m2. Its architecture is a mix of classical, neoclassical, Victorian, Art Nouveau and neo-rococo styles, with high ceilings and decorative prehispanic elements showing the seas, fish, sun and moon, and stained glass showing inca faces. It belonged to Juan Esteban Rios, and at his death, Teodosio Rosell married Luzmila, a daughter of Rios, and ended up buying the property, which was declared a historical monument in 1972. His heirs managed to keep it until it was closed in 1980 because of its ruined condition and remained abandoned for 30 years. Finally, in 2009 the house was rescued and restored to host the decoration exposition Casacor Peru 2009.

To be able to reproduce the stained glass windows on the roof, as I wasn't able to acceed to it to take pictures, I had to obtain fototextures from a video I found in Youtube about the reconstruction of this historical house.
